Dr. Seuss' Cat In The Hat

Large Hat and Bow Tie Crochet Pattern

My 9 year old daughter had a "Dress Up Theme Week" at school. One of them was to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday so they can dress up on any Dr. Seuss' character. My daughter wanted to be the "Cat in the Hat". So after tons of trial and error, got the pattern down and why not share it with you.

Yarn -- You're gonna need to crochet in 2 strands of yarn to make the hat nice and sturdy. I like using Caron One Pound. I used both yarn ends of the skein and crocheted them together.

- 1 Caron One Pound - White

- 1 Caron One Pound - Scarlet Red

Crochet Hook -- J-10 (6.0mm)

Other materials --darning needle, red ribbon

1.  7 hdc around the ring (do not join, you'll be doing a continuous round).

2. 2 hdc in each stitch around (14 sts)

3. 1 hdc, inc x7  (21 sts)

4. inc, 2 hdc x7  (28 sts)

8. 4 hdc, inc, 6 hdc, inc (x6), 2 hdc (56 sts)

9. inc, 7 hdc (x7) (63 sts)

10. 30 hdc, inc, 29 hdc, inc. (63 sts)

Finish off and weave the ends.

This hat is crocheted for a 9 year old girl, if you need a smaller hat, you can decrease the number of rows. For a younger child, you can end your circle to maybe row 6 or 7.

Tip for crocheting

perfect circle:

Don't do the normal increase  count. That's what make the circle to look octagon-y (by placing the increase on top of increases on the previous round). Do the increase in random order. As long as your count is perfect, you'll end up a perfect flat circle. For example, you're in round 8, you need to do 6 hdc and increase, start your row with 3 hdc, inc then 6 hdc and inc all around and you should end up with 3 hdc at the end of your row. Use a marker, in my case, I crochet with a contrast yarn on every end of every row and I just pull it out once my circle is done.

BODY OF THE HAT:

11. Start on any stitch, crochet on the back loop only, hdc in every stitch all around. This time you need to join a slip stitch at every round. So we can have a prefect line when we switch colors.

12 - 15. hdc in every stitch all around.

Switch to white yarn:

16 - 20. hdc in every stitch all around.

Switch to red yarn:

21 - 25.hdc in every stitch all around.

Switch to white yarn:

26 - 30. hdc in every stitch all around.

Switch to red yarn:

31 - 33 .hdc in every stitch all around.

Finish off and weave the ends.

Tip for invincible seam

You always start your row with a 2 chain then hdc all around. At the end of the row, do a hdc stich on top of the chain from the previous row,  then do the slip stitch on the first hdc and not on the chain.  That would eliminate the annoying gap.

BRIM:

With the white yarn pick any stitch to start.

1. Crocheting with the back loop only and facing the inside of the hat.  Start with 2 hdc in the next 2 stitch, then 2 hdc on the next stitch. Repeat all around. Finish the row with a slip stitch.

2. hdc all around. Slip stitch.

3. 2 hdc, then 2 hdc on the next stitch. Finish the row with a slip stitch.

If you want a wider brim, then add another row of hdc all round.

BOW:

With the red yarn, crochet in just one strand of yarn.

1. chain 42

2 - 14  hdc on 3rd stitch from the hook and across (39 sts)

15. Do a sc all around .

CENTER:

1. chain 12

2 - 12. sc on the second chain and sc across. Leave a long tail for sewing.

Put the center around the middle of the bow and sew it at the back.

Use a red ribbon and put through the center.

If you need a smaller bow, you can decrease the number of chain. Instead of 42 chain, you can start with 26 or 30.
